Logion 78-79 Gospel of Thomas
“Why did you come out into the wilderness?
To see… a man dressed in soft raiment like your rulers and the powerful?
Yes, indeed they are clothed in fine, luxurious garments, but what they lack is the ability to discern truth.” (Logion 78)
“A woman in the crowd said to him, ‘Fortunate is the womb which bore you, and the breasts which nourished you.’
Yeshua turned to her and said, ‘The ones who hear the Father’s word
and guard it’s truth are truly fortunate….’ “ (Logion 79)
The word “fortunate” here means “fortune which results in happiness” according to theologians. The woman, naturally, is talking about an earthly cause of that happiness. Jesus is talking about a heavenly one.
What is Jesus saying here? I believe it has to do with the following: The Creator has already given us life. With that life we must seek truth, through hearing God’s word. Even more we must guard that truth. That indicates, if we are not careful, we can lose it, or maybe not hear it, or even not find it in the first place.
Hearing the word is a choice. It’s something we must DO. It is our response to the gift of life.
