Hello and God be with you. I want to tell you about an incredible book I’ve read (and am re-reading) called: “After: A Doctor Explores What Near Death Experiences Reveal About Life And Beyond”, by Bruce Greyson.
I’ve been fascinated by Near Death Experiences (NDE’s) as long as I can remember. My Mother experienced one when she almost died from her 5th childbirth. She told me about it as a child and I always cherished it.
I’ve read several books on them by various authors. They’ve all been interesting for sure. This book, though, is special. It’s the best one I’ve ever read on the topic. And I strongly recommend you consider reading it (audio version is available too).
Here’s why I think it’s important. First, it’s written by an atheist. It’s not written from a religious perspective at all. It’s just what this Psychiatrist, and scientist, has observed over his long career. Second, the book is filled with dozens of these experiences and he describes them in detail, in the person’s own words. Third, he made a study of them and became a leading expert on them. And fourth, it’s very clear that what these people experienced is life changing. It was such an experience of unconditional love and complete acceptance and care, that in most cases it changed their lives forever. This is what Dr Greyson discovered over his many years of study of NDE’s. He even went back to people 20 years later and found the experience was still present to them and still changing their lives.
He ran across his first instance of an NDE in a patient in 1980, before anybody knew what these things even were. In fact, at the time, people who experienced them were generally thought to have had either a hallucination, or dream, or it was drug-induced, or simply that they were to one extent or another “crazy”. He was deeply affected by them though, found he couldn’t explain them, and over time decided to make a study of them.
What he began to discover was that there was no rational, scientific explanation to NDE’s. Now this is a scientist who believes everything can be explained by science. So what he says is credible. I don’t want to give you too many details. Read it and form your own conclusions.
I would just say that if you’re interested in what death is like, and what happens after death, you’ll find this book possibly gives you new information on those things, and possibly changes the way you think about life.
For me, it’s about hope, it’s about joy, it’s about amazement and gratitude for the life we’ve been given. Because what people who have had NDE’s generally come away with are 2 things: they no longer fear death; and they now want to cherish every moment of every day they have. For them, everything changed after this experience.
If that is of interest to you, read this book. And please, share your feelings about it with me and (if you agree) I’ll put it out to the rest of our readers so they can share too.
God bless and enjoy this book!
Peter
